The Age of the Universe

During our recent topic on multicultural education and our visits to different religious places in town, the children began asking many interesting questions about people, cultures, and symbols. Their curiosity led us to an even bigger question: “When is the beginning?”

To explore this idea, I prepared an outdoor activity with a 138-meter-long black and blue  strip of fabric. It represented the 13.8 billion years since the Big Bang, with each centimeter showing one million years. The children helped to slowly unroll the strip along the pavement, watching it stretch farther and farther.

After walking about 90 meters, I told them, “This is when the Earth was finally born.” We continued for another 46 meters until we reached the very end, where I revealed a tiny 2-centimeter white strip, showing how long humans have been on Earth, only about 2 million years. The children gasped when they saw how short it was compared to the whole black strip.

I hope this hands-on experience helped our kindergarteners visualize the immensity of time and understand that we occupy only a small, but very important place in it.

Making Carrot Salad

Cooking is fun for young children. It helps us work together and be creative. In November, in our Penguin class, we made carrot salad. We had so much fun! First, we grated carrots and apples. The kids loved feeling the textures and seeing all the colours in the bowl. Then we squeezed a sweet orange and added a little honey. Everyone took turns stirring the salad.

This activity was not only yummy but also helped us practice our little hands, explore new textures, enjoy the smells of fresh ingredients, and learn about healthy food. Sharing the salad together made it even more fun. The kids loved it.

We were proud of our work and loved eating what we made. Cooking together is always full of laughter, learning, and little proud moments for all of us.

Bunnies Class, 4-5yo

Apple Festival with Bunny Class!

During one week in October, the focus was on apples as we were getting ready for the upcoming event “Apple Festival in Pezinok”.

The Bunny class prepared their market stall in the class, created a poster with apple prints, prepared food and apples to sell, and practiced their math skills by using money and weighing and counting apples.

They dressed in traditional folk costumes to bring folk traditions to life. The children really got into their roles, singing enthusiastically and inviting customers, bringing the lively and authentic atmosphere of the market to life.

It was a fantastic way for them to develop their social and math skills while having fun!

Mixing colors

During our science lesson we played with colors and we explored how colors can change.

First, we had red paint and yellow paint. We put a little red and a little yellow together. We mixed them with the paintbrush. Slowly, the colors changed. The children observed this change and correctly named the new color: “Orange!” Everyone was excited to see a new color appear.

After mixing, we looked at pictures of real birch trees in autumn. We talked about how fall trees have many colors, not just one. Then children used yellow, red and orange to paint their own  fall birch trees. They used their imagination and each picture looked different and beautiful.

This activity helps children learn that red and yellow make orange. They explored the seasonal changes and used fine-motor skills while painting. Children built their observation skills as we talked about fall and nature. This activity also supported their early science thinking.

After the painting activity children proudly presented their work and talked about colors they used.

Show and tell - one great activity for children for several reasons. What are they? Firstly, children can bring an object from home, which they enjoy. Kindergarteners always have show and tell on a specific topic - this means they have the task of choosing the right objects to meet the given tasks, for example, bringing items that start with a certain letter, or are of a specific color, or relate to the monthly theme. For instance, we had yellow,  orange, red, and brown days in October, or items related to Slovakia, during which we had a beautiful presentation of a traditional folk costume. Another benefit is that children present themselves; they learn to speak in front of others, which is an excellent skill for the future, providing preparation for every personality, whether introverted or extroverted. They also learn to express themselves, articulate properly, and form sentences to describe what they brought.

This time, through this block, we would like to introduce you to the importance of the graphomotor lesson in our preschool. Graphomotor is a set of motor activities necessary for drawing and later writing. It is a key skill for a child's development and readiness for school. It may sound very simple, but in order for a child to learn to write, he or she must master several important skills. Graphomotor is not just about correct writing, but about the entire activity. It includes correct sitting and posture, the correct grip of the writing instrument and its correct inclination towards the paper, as well as the pressure of the pencil or pen on the paper. Children train from that point on without even knowing it. Activities that develop it include modeling, stringing beads and playing with paper, as well as various exercises in kindergartens. Graphomotor is a kind of third, highest level of motor skills. The child first discovers gross motor skills, learning to sit, crawl, walk and jump. Later, he begins to develop fine motor skills, i.e. the use of hands and fingers various grips from grabbing objects with the whole palm to a delicate, tweezers grip. Along with fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination also develops, which is directly related to the later development of graphomotor skills. This coordination is gradually improved and thanks to it, children can spontaneously draw and, when the time comes, write.

The current month of November is entirely dedicated to multicultural education. We are learning about our planet Earth, about the individual continents and countries that are located on our planet. One of the very popular activities this month was the Cress world map. By creating it, we could observe and study natural phenomena. Demonstrate the importance of land and water for our lives. Every day, we watched with our children how a 2D map is created and transformed into a 3D reality. Creating 3D maps is also a great way to learn how height is displayed on maps. To create this map, we only needed a large blue bag (it depicts seas and oceans), cotton wool, cress seeds and of course water. If you like our experiment, try it with your children at home too :)
